What Do You Do When You’re Stumped For Creativity?

Do you ever feel like your mind is cloudy and you’re unable to make your way through to your thoughts?Β It’s almost like a fog has rolled in and it’s almost impossible to see. Creative blocks happen to everyone; but the worst part about them is that they can strike at any time. One day we’ll wake up and our brain will feel like mush.

This is the woorrsstt! Especially when you’re trying to work on a project or even come up with an outfit.

It’s like, “why don’t you want to work!?”.

In my case, I become overwhelmed pretty easily, which can lead to stress and burning myself out. My brain tells me “Sorry, Chloe, I can feel you’re stressing out. Let me step in and help you for your own good. *proceeds to turn off all switches*”.

No matter who you are or what you do for Β a living, creativity is something that is in all of us. If you think about it, it’s responsible for our personal style, the types of pictures we take, and so much more.

I used to think that I wasn’t creative because I couldn’t draw or paint (artistic things like that). However, drawing and painting weren’t my type of creativity. I’ve got a vision that can be channeled through photos or my outfits. That’s where I flourish. Other people get creative through their writing. Eventually, we will all run into a wall.

The important thing is how we deal with that when it happens.

Will you keep running into it hoping it’s like Platform 9 3/4 in the Harry Potter Movies? Except you’ll be like second year Harry and Ron who kept running into the wall only to never make it through (don’t you love a good Harry Potter reference lol).

While creative stumps can be such a downer, it is important that we don’t sink into the mindset that we’ll never get out. It’s important that we make the attempt to push through and do what we can to help ourselves.

In terms of my blog, I know I’ve got goals for it and where I want it to be in the future. Creative blocks can’t keep me from creating because that means that what I’m trying to build is put on hold. When things in our life are put on hold, the world continues to move with or without us (and you definitely don’t want it to be without you!).

So, what do I do when this happens? What can you do when it happens to you?

Everyone is different, but here are some things I do to try and get rid of this icky feeling.

Endlessly Scroll Through Instagram

Social media can be inspiring right? There are thousands and thousands of bloggers on Instagram that can be MAJOR inspo for me. Eventually I’ll run into an outfit that I really like and I’ll try to recreate it. Then, I’ll build on that and add my own personal touch.

Pinterest, Pinterest, and More Pinterest

Like Instagram, Pinterest is a great way for me to see a ton of different outfits from different women, all in one place! I like to search for “street style”, “monochromatic”, and “NYFW street style”.

Talk About It

Since my mom takes all of my pictures for my blog, I also look to her for advice. Getting a different perspective can really get ideas flowing. You may not like every idea the other person has for you, but maybe your own idea will come out of that.

Take A Break

I know I said that you don’t wanna get left behind as the world moves on, but sometimes it’s acceptable to just walk away for a bit. Go out and eat, hang out with your friends or family, just get your mind off the task. Maybe people watching can get you inspired. After all, humans are one of the most interesting creatures. Trying to preoccupy yourself can be hard when you’ve got to get something done. At the same time, it’s good to give our minds a break to recharge. Even taking a nap can really rejuvenate you!

Not being able to think or create can be frustrating; but, the best ideas can come from when the frustration passes! Put together a shitty outfit, take a sucky picture, and most likely when you look back at it you’re going to find ways you could have made it better.

Like I mentioned before, what is important is how we deal with our creative blocks. Inspiration is everywhere, we have to just get out there and find it πŸ™‚

This happens to all of us in this blogging world πŸ™‚ And I can so relate to what you wrote about! My own ways of dealing with feeling stumped are very similar, and I rely on taking a break a lot…telling myself that I don’t HAVE to do this, I WANT to. So the moment I stop wanting to do it.. I allow myself. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why I’d never go full time.. but hey, never say never!

Keep up the good work Chloe πŸ™‚

Thanks for reading, Jessica! How funny, I always say that, too. I’d love to go full time one day because I have such a passion for fashion. At the same time, I don’t ever like to force myself to do things. When I have to force it, I know that I’m going to put out crappy content.
      Loved hearing your viewpoint! πŸ™‚
