Being active is an important part of a healthy and happy life; BUT, like most people, getting into the gym (or starting that home workout) is the hardest part. I’m not even kidding, people, I can sit on my bed for an hour with the tv off and THINK about whether or not I should start. The sucky part about it is had I not thought about it and just done it, I would have been done already! The closest I get to getting in some physical activity is getting on and off my bed during commercials.
That counts as some sort of variation of a squat doesn’t it?
Let me start off by giving you a little bit of my background when it comes to working out. I started playing sports when I was five years old; and thank God I did because who knows what my current state would be! I’ve swam competitively (def not Olympic competitive, but competitive), played tennis, basketball, softball, been a cheerleader (the one lifting people, not being lifted), volleyball. You name it. Season to season, I went from one game to the next. I conditioned endlessly and once my sophomore year of high school was over, I quit.
I’d lived that life for too long and I was bored of it.
Since then, I’ve battled with sticking to any type of physical activity. Actually, I think went two years without ever working out. I’ve tried the 12 Week Bikini Body Guide which I made it through to week 11. Yes, super pathetic, I know…
I tried starting it up again and couldn’t get myself to stick with it. Hiit training was NOT my thing.
I’ve tried Z Body Fit’s “Build A Better Booty” program. It’s mainly weight training and it was really great, but again…not for me. As you can see (or not), I’ve got a case of the inverted booty syndrome, pancake booty, whichever you prefer. I got it.
Fast forward to the present time and I’m happy to say that I worked out 4 times last week (yes, I can see the eye rolls as you read that)! Now, I’m onto a new workout program (by Kinobody Fitness). I felt so good that I wanted to throw in a little something extra. I researched boxing, spin, barre, pilates, TRX training and chose TRX at Katie’s Custom Fit.
TRX is resistance training with these funny/intimidating belt looking things. You use your own body weight and can work out your ENTIRE body with them! Squats, lunges, curls, rows. IT’S ALL POSSIBLE.
My boyfriend and I went in on a Monday morning ready to kick some butt! The instructor, Katie, greeted us with a warm welcome. She was ready to have us put in some work!
First things first, TRUSTING that the metal thingy that holds the belts to the wall doesn’t somehow detach! It’s a weird feeling at first!
We started out with basic squats and things like that. I thought to myself, “okay, Chloe, this isn’t so bad!”. Then, I slowly started to become shakier, feeling as if I was going to projectile vomit in Katie’s beautiful studio.
Let’s keep in mind, last week was the first time I’ve worked out in about a year. My stamina hasn’t been rebuilt yet.
Luckily, Katie isn’t the boot camp type of instructor that was going to make me pass out in front of our small 3 person class.
I hazily walked off to the side to get some water and try to regain vision, as I was already going towards the light (aka, heaven).
Why was I not feeling ALIVE like all those IG fit girls who work out 6 times a week? Did they ever feel like upchucking like poor, wimpy me?
As I walked to the restroom, something stuck out at me…or should I say…protruded from my back. Was I staring at Sophia Miacova or was it a figment of my imagination?
Either way, I came back ready to kill myself for another 30 minutes. I couldn’t let the booty of my dreams get away from me!
By the end of the class, my entire body was quivering! About an hour after the class, I still felt great! Those endorphins really are something.
Being fit is not my New Year’s resolution. I don’t believe in those; but I believe in the power of physical activity and its positive impact on our mental health. Not only that, but no matter what size you are, it’s still possible to be unhappy with what kind of shape you’re in.
I haven’t been feeling the greatest about myself and there’s only one way to fix that. Finding a workout or activity that you enjoy doing is KEY to committing to it. If you don’t like what you’re doing, it’s going to be even more dreadful each time you have to get it done.
That’s what I’m trying to do.
Just in general, I don’t like anything that feels like cardio so TRX was perfect. It’s even great for the guys who don’t believe that doing body weight workouts are effective. Even my boyfriend was drenched in sweat after!
It was tough, but today, I felt like I could wear a crop top in the middle of Winter. That’s how good I felt about myself.
I’ll be going back again this weekend to try it with my mom. Hopefully she doesn’t start seeing the light like me!
If anyone lives in the Dinuba, Visalia, Tulare, Fresno area, I HIGHLY recommend trying this out! Katie really let us go at a pace that was great for us. She was encouraging, funny, and worked out right along side us the entire time. What’s even better, is that you can get a free lesson to try out any one of her classes. You’ll feel SO LA and you’ll feel great about yourself after just one class!
